What is Mubarakan?

Mubarakan is a movie that revolves around twin brothers, Karan and Charan, who have opposite personalities and live in different countries. Karan is street-smart, calculating, and flamboyant, while Charan is simple, idealistic, and honest. Karan is in love with Sweety, while Charan is in a relationship with Nafisa. However, their families fix their marriages with Binkle and Nafisa respectively, without knowing their preferences. This leads to a series of hilarious confusions and complications, involving their uncle Kartar Singh, who tries to help them out of their mess.

A brief summary of the plot

The movie begins with a car accident that kills Avtar Singh Bajwa and his wife, leaving behind their twin sons. They are sent to Avtar's brother Kartar Singh Bajwa, who gives one son Karan to his London-based sister Jeeto, and another son Charan to his Punjab-settled brother Baldev. 23 years later, Karan and Charan are grown up respectively in London and Punjab. Karan loves Sweety Gill from two years but Jeeto's husband Paramjeet Sood sets him to wed Binkle Sandhu, the daughter of Paramjeet's business partner Akalpreet Sandhu. To marry Sweety, Karan asks Baldev to make Charan marry Binkle.

However, Charan is already in love with Nafisa Qureshi, a Muslim lawyer. He seeks Kartar's help to get out of the marriage with Binkle. Kartar suggests that Charan should pretend to be a drug addict in front of Binkle's family so that they reject him. However, this plan backfires as Binkle's father is also a drug dealer and he likes Charan even more. Kartar then comes up with another plan to make Charan marry Nafisa by convincing Baldev that she is a Sikh girl named Nafisa Kaur.

Meanwhile, Karan also faces trouble as Sweety's father Gill does not approve of him and wants her to marry a Sikh boy from Punjab. Karan decides to go to Punjab with Kartar and pose as Charan's fiancee Binkle in front of Sweety's family. He hopes that this way he can win over Sweety's father and also make Binkle fall in love with him. However, things get more complicated when Binkle arrives in Punjab with her father and meets Charan as Karan.

The rest of the movie shows how Karan and Charan manage to sort out their love lives and convince their families to accept their choices. The movie ends with a grand double wedding of Karan and Sweety, and Charan and Nafisa, with Kartar's blessings.

The movie was rated 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb, 3.5 out of 5 on Times of India, and 3 out of 5 on Hindustan Times. Some of the critics' comments are as follows:

"Mubarakan is a typical Anees Bazmee film that is low on content but high on entertainment. The film has some genuinely funny moments that will make you laugh out loud. The film also has a good dose of emotions that will touch your heart. The film is a family entertainer that can be enjoyed by everyone." - Bollywood Hungama

"Mubarakan is a comedy of errors that works mainly because of its actors and dialogues. The plot is predictable and the climax is stretched, but the film manages to keep you engaged with its situational humour and witty one-liners. The film is a fun watch for those who love clean comedies." - India Today

"Mubarakan is a loud and chaotic comedy that relies on the double role formula to create confusion and humour. The film has some hilarious moments, especially involving Anil Kapoor, who steals the show with his comic timing and energy. The film, however, suffers from a weak script, a cliched story, and a lack of logic." - NDTV

The movie was also a moderate success at the box office, earning 93.59 crore worldwide against a budget of 65 crore. The movie was the ninth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2017.
