At its very simplest, music is a language just like you'd read aloud from a book. Think of the notes as the letters, the measures as the words, the phrases as the sentences and so forth. Follow our step-by-step introduction to the language of music and you'll be playing along in no time at all.
Learning to play music brings a wide array of beneficial traits that extend beyond the music room. When a musician learns to read, play and perform music, they gain mental, cognitive and emotional health benefits that will last throughout their lifetime.

My 11 year old grandson needs some more advanced piano music. He is finished with Humoresque and working Tchaikovsky 1. All I can find is easy music. He does mostly rock in the bands and lessons, and need more classical to round out his experience. I have researched all I can on internet. Any more ideas??
I never realized what a great selection of sheet music was available at Sam Ash until I wandered into their midtown Manhattan location. As I walked past their sheet music department each time I walked through their store on West 36th Street, I would notice the many titles available. This got me curious enough to browse the various titles they had available in their online sheet music store. I discovered that Sam Ash had a large array of sheet music available through their online store.
You read that right! Amazon has a great selection of sheet music online, both in hard copy and in download version through their Kindle store. A quick search through the sheet music available online through Amazon reveals music in a wide variety of styles, for many different instruments, and for all different levels. While not a complete source for all of your sheet music needs, Amazon can provide most of the sheet music that most teachers would need for their students.

I love ordering from Amazon because with my Amazon Prime membership, I get free shipping, which is definitely not the case for most online music stores! (If you're not already an Amazon Prime member, you can get a 30-day free trial here.)
Here in Canada, The Royal Conservatory of Music is one of 2 main examination boards. Once my students complete their method books, I move them into the leveled books from RCM to help them continue to progress in their skills.
They have books of repertoire pieces, étude pieces, and even a very thorough series of theory workbooks. And their repertoire selections include a range of musical styles, from baroque, to contemporary, and everything in between.
The best place to buy these books is direct from the RCM Bookstore. What I love most about the RCM Bookstore is that they charge a flat rate $5 shipping. So no matter how many books you order, you still only pay $5.
You can actually order printed books of sheet music from this website and have it shipped to your door, but when I go to Sheet Music Plus, I'm usually on the hunt for a single sheet of a specific song, so I usually prefer to order a PDF for instant download.
Another (possibly even better) benefit is that a lot of the time, the composers/arrangers will post an audio recording or a link to a YouTube performance of the music, so you'll be able to hear it first and decide whether you like the arrangement.
You know when you go to YouTube and listen to piano covers of your favourite popular songs, and there's a link in the description to the sheet music for the song? Those links usually lead to Sheet Music Plus!
Piano Pronto is a line of piano books created by Jennifer Eklund. Her Fired Up! method books are my go-to for teen beginners who can't stand the thought of starting out with songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb.
You can preview the sheet music on the Piano Pronto website to decide whether it's the right level for you, and you can listen to samples to help you decide whether it's music you would enjoy playing. So you always know exactly what you're getting.
MusicTime.ca is a Canadian online retailer that sells Piano Pronto books. The shipping is flat rate $12.50CAD (which to me is still a lot to pay for shipping, but it's a lot cheaper than shipping directly from the Piano Pronto website).
The good news is it's flat rate shipping, so if you find a lot of books you like, it's easier to rationalize the shipping cost. (And if you're a piano teacher, you can bulk order books for several students and split the shipping between them so they each only have to pay a small portion of the shipping).

The site has audio recordings and preview pages for most of their selections. They also have a My Library feature that allows you to download your music on the device of your choice, where it can be marked up and organized into playlists.
You can search by collections, instruments, or genres, and they also have some free scores available. They also offer a free download for software to transpose your purchased music to a different key.

Musicians have a natural tendency to invent and experiment. Some of the greatest artists reject boundaries and pigeon-holes in the name of originality, knowing that it's no fun being confined to one particular style of music.

Paul Gemignani is one of the titans of the modern musical theater industry. Serving as musical director for more than forty Broadway productions since 1971, his collaborations with Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Kander, Fred Ebb, Hal Prince, Michael Bennett, and Alan Menken have led to countless accolades for his collaborators, but due to the near invisible position of the musical director in the Broadway industry, Gemignani's story is often overlooked. GEMIGNANI seeks to not only...
