Proprietary Linear Actuator
A sealed rod-less pneumatic linear actuator provides smooth linear motion without an exposed piston rod, enabling long strokes in a compact, protected form factor.
The enclosed design improves durability and reliability, making it ideal for industrial automation and motion systems where space efficiency and contamination resistance are critical.

Separate from the noise, position for the future.
Sealed Rod-less Pneumatic Linear Actuator — Development
Overview
Elemental Dynamics is developing a sealed rod-less pneumatic linear actuator intended for applications where compact linear motion, high side-load tolerance, and true pressure retention are required. The project targets use cases that conventional rod-less cylinders cannot fully support—specifically scenarios where the actuator must be charged, isolated by closed valves, and remain leak-tight even when external forces are applied to the carriage.
Core Design Objective
The primary objective is to achieve near-zero leakage performance in a rod-less architecture. Most commercial rod-less pneumatic cylinders rely on a longitudinal slot with traveling sealing bands, which inherently allows slight air leakage by design. Elemental Dynamics’ development effort focuses on alternative sealing and guidance strategies that maintain internal pressure integrity while preserving the compact footprint and mechanical advantages of rod-less motion.
Mechanical Architecture & Sealing Strategy
The actuator is being engineered around:
-
Closed or effectively sealed pressure chambers, eliminating continuous open slots typical of standard rod-less designs
-
Advanced sealing interfaces optimized for static and dynamic pressure retention under load
-
Integrated guidance and bearing surfaces that manage side loads and bending moments without transferring stress into the sealing system
This approach allows the carriage to experience external forces—such as user input, payload loading, or system back-drive—without compromising the pneumatic seal.
Performance & Control Characteristics
From a functional standpoint, the actuator is designed to support:
-
Predictable force and position response, suitable for controlled motion profiles
-
Port-locking and hold capability, enabling the actuator to maintain position without continuous air flow
-
Smooth, low-noise operation, supporting use in medical, fitness, and indoor automation environments
These characteristics make the actuator suitable not only for continuous motion, but also for hold-and-release and pre-programmed motion sequences.
Reliability & Lifecycle Focus
A major component of the project is durability engineering. Material selection, wear surfaces, contamination control, and seal life are being evaluated to ensure consistent performance over extended cycle counts. The goal is a reusable motion module that maintains sealing performance across thousands of operating cycles with minimal maintenance.
Platform Role Within Elemental Dynamics
This sealed rod-less actuator is not being developed as a standalone component, but as a core motion engine shared across multiple Elemental Dynamics products—including adaptive human-motion systems and precision industrial handling platforms. By standardizing on a high-integrity motion module, improvements in sealing, control, and reliability propagate across the broader product ecosystem.
In summary, the project represents a focused effort to redefine what a rod-less pneumatic actuator can do—combining compact form factor, load tolerance, and true sealing performance to enable applications that conventional designs cannot reliably support.
